You Gotta Have Faith
“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”
One of my favourite lines in the whole Bible “But even if he doesn’t” Wow! What faith. They are about to be thrown into the furnace the fire inside is so hot it kills the people who open the door to it! In the face of that they are given another chance to bow down and worship the dictator like king but they refuse. These are the words they used. “We want to make it clear we will NEVER serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up” Wow again talk about angering the beast. This is a man who built a 90foot statue in gold of himself then forced people to worship it! What is your 90foot statue I wonder? But these 3 faithful men of God said no. In faith they said no - even if it meant death. They would rather die than not trust and honour God. Wow would I be that faithful? But what happened next? The 3 men were thrown into the fire filled furnace fully clothed and the king watched as 4 men - yes 4 men - walked about in the fire unharmed! “They didn’t even smell of smoke”. The king then spoke of their great faith in adversity and commanded the whole of his people to worship God. He saw the strength of their faith in dire circumstances and it drew him to join it. Wow. This is the faith I want. I want to be like Daniel and his friends. All my readings lately have been about faith. I am absolutely sure God is saying to me “have faith without sight”. “Do you trust me when you can’t see the outcome?” You see we can’t always see, hear, touch and feel our way to God. Sometimes we are required to trust in faith like shadrach, meshach and abednego. Like Abraham. Feelings do not equal faith. Trusting in God in the depths of pain with no feelings equals faith. That is why reading His Word is so important. It lights our way when our world turns black. “But even if he doesn’t” turns to “they didn’t even smell of smoke”. So I encourage you today to work on deepening your faith for our times of firey furnace knowing our God is good and He loves us. Maybe you are standing in front of your own firey furnace today? With a moral dilemma, a test of your faith, a deep loss or a choice to make between the way of the world and the way of Jesus. Take heart from Daniel 3 then. Read it, absorb it and trust that God means you too. He loves you enough to save you in some way from the fire but do you love him and yourself enough to trust in Him?
